He was a great supporter of local businesses in the Southend area. I wish I had got to know him rather than just seeing him now and again. We all miss him with affection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sir <strong>David Amess<\/strong> (26 March 1952 \u2013 15 October 2021) was a long-serving <strong>British Conservative Member of Parliament<\/strong> (MP), best remembered for his deep commitment to his constituents, his compassion for animals, and his tireless work for numerous charitable causes. His life combined traditional Tory principles with a strong social conscience, underpinned by his Roman Catholic faith and lifelong love of animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early Life and Education<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Born:<\/strong> 26 March 1952, Plaistow, Essex (now part of London).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Family:<\/strong> Son of James and Maud Amess; raised in a working-class family.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Education:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Attended <strong>St Bonaventure\u2019s Grammar School<\/strong>, Forest Gate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Studied <strong>Economics and Government<\/strong> at <strong>Bournemouth College of Technology<\/strong> (now Bournemouth University).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before entering politics, he worked as a <strong>teacher<\/strong> and then as a <strong>recruitment consultant<\/strong>, developing a strong sense of social responsibility and public service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Political Career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Entry into Parliament<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Amess first stood for Parliament in 1979 in Newham North West (unsuccessfully).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Elected as <strong>MP for Basildon<\/strong> in <strong>1983<\/strong>, riding the Conservative wave under Margaret Thatcher.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>His Basildon seat became a <strong>symbol of Middle England<\/strong>, and his re-election in 1992 was widely seen as signalling John Major\u2019s surprise national victory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Southend West MP (1997\u20132021)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After boundary changes, he moved to the <strong>Southend West<\/strong> constituency, where he served continuously from <strong>1997 until his death<\/strong> in 2021.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He became one of the longest-serving MPs in the Commons, with nearly <strong>40 years of service<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Known for being <strong>independent-minded<\/strong>, Amess voted according to his conscience rather than strict party lines, especially on moral and animal welfare issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Animal Welfare Advocacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sir David Amess was one of the most prominent <strong>animal welfare champions in British politics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Patron and supporter<\/strong> of numerous animal charities, including:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The League Against Cruel Sports<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Humane Society International UK<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dogs Trust<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Donkey Sanctuary<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Compassion in World Farming<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Served as <strong>Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Animal Welfare<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Campaigned for:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ending <strong>live animal exports<\/strong> for slaughter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Banning <strong>puppy farming<\/strong> and <strong>illegal puppy imports<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better regulation of <strong>pet sales and breeding<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved standards for <strong>farm animal welfare<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consistently opposed <strong>fox hunting<\/strong> and other blood sports, often at odds with traditional Conservative views.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, he supported the <strong>Animal Welfare (Sentencing and Recognition of Sentience) Bill<\/strong>, which increased penalties for animal cruelty and formally recognised animals as <strong>sentient beings<\/strong> in UK law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He often described animals as \u201c<strong>innocent beings who depend entirely on human compassion and decency<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2764\ufe0f Community, Faith, and Causes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A devout <strong>Roman Catholic<\/strong>, he often campaigned on <strong>pro-life<\/strong> issues and spoke about the moral responsibilities of politicians.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promoted <strong>mental health awareness<\/strong>, <strong>endometriosis care<\/strong>, and <strong>accessibility for people with disabilities<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Authored a humorous and heartfelt memoir, <em>Ayes &amp; Ears: A Survivor\u2019s Guide to Westminster<\/em> (2020), giving insight into his experiences in Parliament and his devotion to Southend.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One of his long-term dreams was to have <strong>Southend-on-Sea declared a city<\/strong>, a goal posthumously achieved in <strong>2022<\/strong> as a tribute to his life and service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2694\ufe0f Death and Legacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sir David Amess was <strong>tragically killed<\/strong> on <strong>15 October 2021<\/strong> during a constituency surgery at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>His murder shocked the nation and highlighted concerns about the safety of MPs and public servants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He was posthumously remembered for his <strong>kindness, humour, accessibility<\/strong>, and unwavering commitment to his community.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>City of Southend-on-Sea<\/strong> was formally granted city status in his honour \u2014 fulfilling his long-held ambition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Parliament and across the political spectrum, he was celebrated as a <strong>true public servant<\/strong>, <strong>devoted family man<\/strong>, and <strong>friend to animals<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I used to see Sir David at business breakfast club meetings.
